Chapter 4, Eve
Su Wan waved her hand to interrupt the fat man's nonsense, suddenly exclaiming: "No... Yang Ke, Lao Hua, don't you think there should be many more survivors outside?"
I had not finished loading the bullets when the woman had already relaxed her hands. She was clearly not dead, staring blankly at the child she had killed. Suddenly, she let out a hoarse scream. Despite her severe injuries, she still had the strength to stand up while holding the boy's lifeless body, taking one step at a time towards the door
At a critical moment, the stout man shouted loudly, leaping forward with a kitchen knife that struck into the monster's shoulder blade. Before I could even cheer, the stout man's left hand wielded the knife again, severing the monster's neck in one swift motion
The three of us tidied up and cautiously approached the entrance of the savings bank. Su Wan nudged me with the keys and gently asked, "Can you drive?"
The three of us opened the door to that bedroom, and upon entering, a sense of desolation filled my heart, yet it suddenly warmed. To our surprise, there stood a boy, around seven or eight years old, in the room! When the boy saw the three of us burst in, he was so frightened that he kept retreating until he reached the wall.
I still have four shots left" Su Wan replied calmly
The fat man muttered, "Those rice dumplings have evolved into Tyson."
I absentmindedly finished the canned meat, completely unable to detect any flavor. I casually picked up a bottle of mineral water, took a sip, and found it equally tasteless. I cleared my throat and said sincerely: "In any case, I should thank both of you for saving my life. If it weren't for you, I might have turned into a zongzi and gone around the streets eating people."
I shot her a glance and said, "Nonsense, being the last means walking at the back; even a fool knows that"
I shouted loudly: "Stop talking! Even if there are lions and tigers, we must go out! You have seen it; this catastrophe is devastating for all of humanity. Do you want to witness the end of human civilization?"
We were all astonished; this woman seemed to have regained her senses, yet also appeared completely unaware of what she was doing, as she walked step by step towards the entrance of the building
The overweight man gestured to us, signaling for the two of us to get in the car
I did not know if this would be enough to kill her. Reflecting on past experiences, it seemed that only by breaking the head of the zongzi could they be completely eliminated. With this thought, I hurriedly raised my gun and aimed at her head. When I pulled the trigger, it surprisingly did not fire! In my shock and anger, I thought I had encountered the legendary "stinky" bullet that had not been seen for a hundred years. However, after a moment of realization, I remembered that in my haste to kill the zongzi charging at me, I had only loaded one bullet!
I tossed the tactical belt to Su Wan, only to see her wrap it around her waist directly. I couldn't help but curse myself for being so foolish; how did I not think that retrieving the bullets that way would be more convenient
It was quite easy to see the overweight man climb into the driver's cabin of the armored vehicle, and then he made an 'OK' gesture to us, waving a belt filled with bullets in front of me.
Su Wan nodded and struck a pose of a great person: "Let’s go!"
The standoff between both sides lasted only a brief two to three seconds. Upon discovering us, the zongzi in the front immediately charged over recklessly. Su Wan hurriedly raised her gun and fired, "Bang! Bang!" Two shots took down the first two. I also raised my gun to shoot; although it was my first time firing, the distance between us was so close that by the time my second bullet was fired, the charging zongzi was less than two meters away from me. There was absolutely no way I could miss. The two zongzi I hit staggered and fell down.
It was the voice of a woman; the piercing scream echoed in the empty corridor, sending chills down one's spine. Su Wan exclaimed, "Not good! We are late!" and rushed forward, brandishing a shotgun.
Although what the fat man said was somewhat exaggerated, there was still some truth to it. I said to Su Wan, "Sister Wan, I think we should start our search from the residential buildings. Firstly, the space there is relatively small, making it convenient for hiding people. Secondly, if we encounter a large-scale attack from the zongzi, at least we can rely on the security doors for protection"
We all followed his指 and were taken aback; the woman lying in a pool of blood was surprisingly not dead, but was struggling to sit up. However, it was evident that she had sustained severe injuries, and although she managed to sit up, she did not even have the strength to lift her head.
I felt my face flush at what the girl said, while the chubby guy beside me gleefully remarked, "I thought I was the only idiot; finally, I've found a kindred spirit."
It was an exceedingly ordinary six-story residential building, with the entrance door on the ground floor being the type of all-metal product we commonly encounter. Those wishing to enter the hallway either had to possess the key to the entrance door or wait for someone inside to open it. A security door like this would be futile for several ordinary young men to attempt to open with their bare hands.
Once I sat inside the armored cash transport vehicle, I felt a sense of relief. The primary consideration of a police cash transport vehicle is to prevent unauthorized access from the outside, making it the best choice for us at this moment
I said: "It's just like shooting a gun"
The residents on the first and second floors are all vacant. Except for a few households that are relatively clean, most of the homes are filled with bloodstains, which is quite nauseating. However, the fat man remains unfazed and casually takes a kitchen knife from one of the kitchens. With two kitchen knives in hand, he instantly reveals a fierce demeanor, resembling the legendary "Black Whirlwind" Li Kui from the past.
I almost let out a curse, thinking to myself that we only had a total of 8 bullets, and yet you dare to come out and try to save someone? But then I reconsidered; at least I still had a broken gun with 4 bullets in hand, while the poor fat guy only had a large kitchen knife.
Su Wan turned the gun around, ready to shoot the big rice dumpling in the head. I hurriedly reached out to push her, stopping her. Su Wan glared at me fiercely, and I said to her: "Don't be anxious, this big rice dumpling is a bit strange." Su Wan clearly did not believe me, but seeing that the big rice dumpling did not seem to rush over to fight, she relaxed her trigger finger, though the gun was still aimed at the big rice dumpling's head.
I was overjoyed at first, after all, it was quite amusing to only have four rounds of ammunition on me. This type of shotgun, designed specifically for security in police cash transport vehicles, does not prioritize long-range lethality, which is why the barrel is quite short. In the case of such a weapon, if it runs out of bullets, it would be utterly inadequate even as a makeshift firewood stick
Both the fat man and I shuddered upon hearing this. The fat man slapped his forehead and said, "Yes... how did I not think of that? Nowadays, every household has installed security doors. Unless opened from the inside, no matter how strong the zongzi is, it would be difficult to break through the iron frame of the security door..." The fat man's voice grew softer as he spoke, until he finally murmured, "But it's already been seven days; those people would either have died of fright or starved to death..."
I thought of my parents, whose fate was also uncertain, and I couldn't help but feel a wave of sorrow; tears nearly rolled down my cheeks. Just as I was about to reach out to wipe my tears, I looked up and saw the large figure at the door making some strange gestures. It took me a moment to realize that it was a signal of danger
The fat man was taken aback and exclaimed, "Go out to save people? Are you joking?" He looked down at the small hole on the tip of his shoe and said, "If even the enchanted pug is that terrifying, what will we do if we encounter an enchanted tiger or lion?"
The little guy was clearly frightened, so the chubby man had no choice but to speak the truth: "Buddy, your mother has already passed away. Come with us, and we will take you to a safe place"
Su Wan shot me a glare, and the chubby man sighed, taking the key from Su Wan's hand, muttering: "You two claim to know nothing, yet you still pretend to be saviors"
The large number of bullets that the fat man tossed over, at the very least, amounted to twenty! How could I not be overjoyed? While I stuffed bullets into my pocket, I asked Su Wan, "Sister Wan, how many bullets do you have?" She had already mentioned that she was twenty-four years old, which made us peers. However, my birthday is quite significant, falling on the third day of the first lunar month, and to this day, I have yet to meet anyone older than me based on my birthday. Nevertheless, since the fat man called her Sister Wan, I followed suit to avoid the fat man thinking I was taking advantage of him if he called her sister and I called her younger sister.
Su Wan angrily said: "Don't talk nonsense, how could there be lions and tigers in today's big cities?"
Before I could finish my words, the stout man nodded incessantly and said with a smile: "As long as you understand, from now on, I will be your reborn parents, your new father and mother. You don't need to be overly grateful to me; just be a bit more filial in the future."
In the hall, four or five blood-soaked zongzi suddenly appeared out of nowhere! Just as we were in a daze, another zongzi walked in from the hallway, clearly having followed us here. The last zongzi to enter was tall, standing over 1.9 meters. What shocked us even more was that this fellow turned around and closed the door behind him.
The door of the resident in Room 401 on the fourth floor was ajar, and the sound of a terrible scream was coming from inside. Su Wan kicked the door open, and the three of us looked into the room, instantly becoming tense. We saw a blood-soaked figure resembling a zongzi, pinning a woman in pajamas down on the sofa and biting her. The woman could no longer scream; only her two hands were futilely flailing, trying to push the monster off her.
Without saying a word, the stout man tore the bed sheet into strips, went over, and held the infant girl in his arms, securing her to his chest with the strips of cloth. He turned to us and said: "Now we have a second Eve."
"Mom ... ... " The little boy, who had originally been hiding behind me, called out and rushed out without hesitation, throwing himself into the woman's arms, crying and shouting: "Mom, what happened to you, Mom ... ... "
The three of us headed straight for the nearest residential building. The chubby one may not run very fast, but when it comes to driving, he is quite adept, skillfully maneuvering the car to the entrance of the building and turning it around neatly.
At this moment, Su Wan had already loaded her bullet, but the situation before her was too strange. She held the gun and aimed for a long time, yet she did not pull the trigger.
The fat man retorted, "What do you mean there aren't any? There are plenty in the zoo! Those dumplings are completely irrational; they bite whatever they see. How do you know they wouldn't dare to bite the tigers and lions in the cages?"
The stout man turned to Su Wan and said, "Big Sister, you are the captain now; where do you think we should go first?" I had no objections to the term "Big Sister," after all, it is said that those who are accustomed to handling firearms, in small-scale military operations, any police officer is more professional than an ordinary citizen.
I continued, "Then stop putting on that ridiculous act. Let's go out together to save people! Without a certain population base, any race will face extinction. Do you think we are Adam and Eve? That just one man and one woman can reproduce the entire human race?"
Su Wan said, "Let us not act recklessly; isn't there an armored truck parked at the entrance?" She picked up a set of keys from the table and added, "I believe we can make use of these."
Glancing again at Su Wan, he saw her bending down to pick up the gun that had fallen to the ground
The chubby man hurriedly asked, "Of course, where is your sister?" As soon as the question was asked, we realized that there was not just the little boy in this room; in the corner by the head of the bed, there was also a crib, in which a chubby, fair-skinned baby was sound asleep
Su Wan and I stood at the entrance, one on each side, first looking around to ensure there was no danger. The chubby man half-knelt and half-crawled toward the car, and from his back, he clearly resembled an oversized Jerry Mouse.
With a bang, the gun in Su Wan's hand fired. At such a close distance, even a child would not miss; with just one shot, it blew the monster's head off, dark blood spraying from the cavity and splattering onto the ceiling, before its body tilted to one side, revealing the woman who had been pinned beneath it.
We were about to continue our search on the third floor, but just as we were about to step onto the stairs leading to the third floor, we suddenly heard a terrified scream coming from the fourth floor: "Help!"
Although I was confused, I was not to the extent of giving up on self-preservation. I still clumsily loaded the bullets, raised the gun, and aimed the muzzle at the head of that large dumpling.
The boy might have already known about his mother fighting the monster, and it was easy for him to believe our words. However, he made a request to us: "Could you... take my sister away as well?"
Su Wan still maintained a stern expression, but a hint of a smile was clearly visible. I suddenly realized that this girl was indeed very beautiful. If she could walk the T-stage and strut her stuff for two rounds, I wonder how many boys she would captivate.
The boy asked in confusion: "Where is Mom?"
Su Wan swung the gun and said, "Let's go up and take a look. I'll take the lead, and you stay at the rear..." Then she asked me, "Do you know what it means to stay at the rear?"
She shot me a couple of glances and said, "If you don't know, just say you don't know. Pretending to understand when you don't can be deadly!" After lecturing me for a few moments, she finally explained, "To be the rear guard means you need to constantly pay attention to the situation behind us at mhetushucom.com, to prevent any enemies from launching a surprise attack from behind. Do you understand?"
At this moment, the security door before us has been forcibly torn off from its frame
The stout man was originally planning to light a fire, but upon hearing this, he paused and said: "No way? Just the three of us conducting a thorough search? We don't even need to rescue anyone; just checking out a few houses in the city would be enough to tire us out to the point of needing reading glasses."
As soon as the fat man and I finished speaking, we both realized that what we had said was incorrect. An activity capable of destroying the entire world and human civilization is not something that any civilized person could undertake
"Are you alright?" The stout man took a step forward, intending to check the woman's injuries, but Su Wan blocked him with her gun and said despondently, "Don't bother, she won't survive."
The large zongzi hissed a few times, surprisingly waved at me, and slowly retreated until it reached the entrance of the building, where it finally stopped. It then pointed at the woman who was collapsed on the sofa.
In that moment, the sixth zongzi lunged at us. I realized we were in trouble, and Su Wan's expression changed as well. It seemed like we were all about to fall victim to its attack. Suddenly, a pair of bloodied hands seized the zongzi's head, twisting it violently in a clockwise motion. With a sharp "crack," the zongzi's head was forcefully wrenched off. The zongzi, with its neck broken, turned to make a final desperate strike, but before that bloodied hand could fully swing, it was caught by an even larger bloodied hand. The zongzi's hand was then brutally torn off.
Su Wan said without hesitation: "There is currently no better solution. In the absence of a distress signal, what we can do is conduct a thorough search."
The large zongzi nodded, his hands covered in blood, and he used his finger to write six blood-red characters on the snow-white wall: "Don't be afraid, I am a good person"
"Stop talking nonsense and retreat quickly!" Su Wan commanded loudly. We also knew that it was not suitable to stay here for long, so we walked out of the bedroom. Upon arriving in the hall, we were all stunned.
"No way!" The policewoman stood up, grabbing the shotgun, her eyes shining as she said, "In this day and age, which household doesn't keep some food in the refrigerator? Surviving for seven or eight days is hardly a problem! You two tidy up a bit; let's go see if there are any survivors left." After glancing at her watch, she added, "There are still over three hours until sunset; perhaps we can save many more people."
Upon closer inspection, I saw that the woman's neck had been bitten to a pulp, blood gushing forth like a fountain. She seemed to want to say something to us, but with her neck in such a state, how could she possibly speak? The woman also knew that her time was up; with her last ounce of strength, she pointed towards the bedroom door, gasping a few times before her head tilted and she fell silent.
The three of us, trembling with fear, got off the cash transport vehicle. After observing our surroundings, we confirmed that there was indeed no movement. We then approached the entrance of the first unit, and just one glance made our hearts sink.
At that moment, I truly wanted to give myself a hard slap. I had clearly heard about Su Wan's mother's situation, yet I never considered that the woman on the sofa could also have turned into a corpse. A moment's lapse in judgment led to the loss of the little boy's life. I was filled with rage and aimed a shot at that madwoman. The bullet entered through her shoulder and exited through her ribcage on the other side, ultimately creating another hole in the sofa.
The woman sitting on the sofa has already lifted her head, and a dark red liquid is flowing from her facial features. She hisses and screeches, having already strangled the boy's neck
I know that at this moment I must rely on myself, keeping an eye on the madwoman who is so close, while fumbling to load bullets into the chamber... Humans are strange creatures; when calamity repeatedly befalls them, even the most timid individuals can awaken the courage that lies deep within.
At present, we can only analyze the situation up to this point. There are several doubts that we cannot comprehend. The first is the resurrection of Su Wan's mother, and the second is who initiated this biochemical war. Particularly regarding the second point, various signs indicate that this viral crisis clearly has human factors involved.
The hall fell silent in an instant; the person who saved us at the critical moment turned out to be the big guy who was the last to enter the room and casually closed the door behind him
The woman walked step by step to the door, arriving in front of the large zongzi, seemingly complaining that the large zongzi was blocking her way
Just as I was about to speak, I saw Su Wan rush up to the fourth floor. I hurriedly followed her, and in the midst of my haste, I still remembered to glance back down the stairs. Not seeing any zongzi following me, I felt a slight sense of relief
Suddenly, an ominous premonition surged within me, and I vaguely sensed that something was amiss. Instinctively, I turned around and was taken aback!
The fat man lowered his head and said: "Of course not."
The fifth zongzi lunged forward, and he swiftly knocked the shotgun from Su Wan's hands to the ground. In a flurry, I tried to load bullets into the chamber, but the more anxious I became, the more mistakes I made. Trembling, I attempted to push the bullets into the chamber, yet no matter what I did, they wouldn't go in. In my frantic state, I caught a glimpse of two old shells still remaining in my gun's chamber.
Su Wan reached out to touch her face and sighed, "We are too late; your mother has already been bitten to death by the zongzi. It is not safe here; hurry and come with us."
The fat man quickly waved his hand, glanced at Su Wan, and then said: "Stop saying so much useless stuff, making me look like a fool... Besides, the current situation is not as dire as that of Adam and Eve; at least we have two Adams now." Seeing Su Wan's displeased expression, he hurriedly added: "However, having only one Eve is indeed too few. How about we go out and snatch a bride?"
The stout man was not to be underestimated, wielding a large kitchen knife in each hand, closely following Su Wan. Although his weapons appeared intimidating, they could only be used in close combat, a fact that the stout man was clearly aware of; for distant enemies, he could only rely on Su Wan.
The large zongzi said nothing and suddenly broke her neck. The woman, holding the corpse of her child, fell to the ground with an "ordinary" thud.
Moreover, the consequences of such actions are unimaginable. The "pyramid scheme" virus is, after all, a highly contagious virus, and even the spreaders cannot escape the possibility of being infected. Furthermore, even if they possess the antidote, once they are poisoned, will they have the time to inject or take the antidote themselves?
As for me, I estimate that in the eyes of this fat person, I must be regarded as a burdensome waste. I do not blame the fat person, as I view him in the same way.
